The Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against persons with disabilities. With the hundreds and thousands of disabled people in United States, the Disability Discrimination Act gives them the right of access to everyday services and employment opportunities that other take for granted.
The concept of disability discrimination act is made simple. It attempts to end the discrimination that many disabled individuals face. Basically, it provides them in:
• access to goods, instrument, machine, and services
It is also the goal of disability Discrimination act to promote disability equality whose duty will have a significant impact on the way in which all public services are run and on improving the lives of disabled individuals.
Employers under the Disability Discrimination Act are required to make reasonable adjustments or changes to accommodate disabled people. However, it is often difficult to comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act because of health and safety laws. You have to understand though that a workplace that is accessible and safe to disabled people is safer and more accessible for everyone. Nevertheless, as an employer you do not need to make adjustments for your workers unless you already have a disabled employee or a disabled person applies for a job with you.
Some of the reasonable changes that an employer can do is rearranging furniture to provide better access, allowing someone to work more flexible hours, allowing some time off for rehabilitation or treatment, moving a disabled person to a more suitable vacancy or to a more accessible site and reallocating some duties of a job to another member of the staff. These are just a few examples of changes that an employer can do to accommodate disabled workers. What changes you will need to adapt will still depend on individual situations and needs of disabled workers. If an employer is found to have discriminated against a disabled employee or job applicant, he may have to pay compensation to the disabled applicant or employee.
Furthermore, if you provide service to the public you also have responsibilities under the discrimination act. You also have to make reasonable changes to the way you provide your services to make sure that you don’t discriminate against a disabled customer. It is important that you do not refuse to serve a disabled customer or provide a lower standard of service because of their disability. So it is essential that as an employer and a public service provider, you provide access and working opportunities to disabled individuals in your organization.
