Disability Insurance Benefits
There are various disability insurance benefits programs in the U.S. that will help you pay your medical bills and get you back to work in the event that you can't work due to disability.
Some disability insurance gives you benefits already on the date that you file your claim...even before your disability begins. Other disability insurance may have a waiting period before you start receiving the benefits. Knowing these disability insurance programs would be an advantage for you before you would even need them.
Employers usually are the ones who provide these programs to their employees, in addition to health care, dental and life insurance benefits. Insurance can be long-term or short-term. Some pay 100 percent of disability insurance premiums and give the benefits to all eligible employees. Others offer disability insurance benefits at discounted group rates and give eligible employees the option to elect coverage.
There are also other employers that offer free short-term disability insurance, and give eligible employees the option to elect long-term disability insurance at discounted group rates. You can check from the HR department of your office to find out if you have a short term or long-term disability insurance and its extent.
The State of California offers state disability insurance benefits programs. If you don't have your personal insurance, or if you're not employed, you can get yourself insured through state benefits. If you are employed, you may or may not opt to receive state benefits through automatic payroll deduction in addition to your employer's disability benefits programs.
If you are paying your social security taxes, you may also collect social security disability benefits. Although it doesn't cover short term or partial disability, it's still a good addition to the benefits you're already enjoying, especially if your disability will prevent you from doing substantial work for more than a year.
