IRS: Identity Theft Causes Millions of Bad Tax Returns

Chicago, Ill. – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials have warned taxpayers about the prevalence of social security identity theft, reports stated.

According to IRS officials, more than half of the $1.75 million bad tax returns IRS has stopped in 2011 were due to identity theft and incorrect filing of tax returns.

IRS officials have also pointed out that identity thieves usually file tax returns under another person’s name using the latter’s Social Security number.

According to Charlotte Crane, a law professor and tax specialist, taxpayers should never respond to calls or emails asking for Social Security number to avoid becoming victims of identity theft.
