OC Employees Union Asks Court to Halt Layoffs

Santa Ana, OC -The Orange County Employees Association, the largest public union, has asked for a temporary restraining order to stop layoffs of more than 200 workers.

In a union statement, the restraining order will appear in Superior Court on Friday, to argue that the county has not expressed the need for layoffs under their collective bargaining agreement.

Union officials assert that the county should instead save money by cutting management perks and remodeling projects.

Two hundred ten social service workers and 58 probation employees will be laid off as stated, to trim $32 million from the 2009 budget.

According to the county officials, the cuts were prompted by a deficit in state subsidy.

The County CEO, Tom Mauk, however, disputed that the legal action is “frivolous” and said that it shows how the union is out of touch with the taxpayers’ need.
