Rep. West Blasts President Obama; Calls Social Security Disability “Modern Slavery”

July 9, 2012

Florida Republican representative Allen West accused President Barack Obama Sunday of making Americans fully dependent on social security programs, calling Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) a form of “modern slavery.”

The congressman told Fox News that last month, “85,000 went on Social Security disability as opposed to 80,000 jobs created.”

He then reiterated that the people “are creating the sense of economic dependence,” which he believes “is a form of modern, 21st-century slavery.”

The previous weekend, he made reference to slavery when he spoke about social programs and President Obama, saying that the president “does not want you to have the self-esteem of getting up and earning, and having that title of American… he’d rather you be his slave.”

Known to be a firm conservative legislator, he was also previously ridiculed for revealing that he had evidence that more than 80 Democratic members of the U.S. Congress were communists.

MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry accused Rep. West last week of upfront attention seeking, saying that he is one who goes over the line “to get free media coverage.”
