SSA Mistakenly ‘Kills’ 85-year-old Allen Man; Freezes Health Benefits

November 23, 2012

Allen, Tex. – Collin Country’s Sallie Smith had the shock of her life during Thanksgiving day after a hospital visit revealed that the Social Security Administration (SSA) had mistakenly considered their dad dead, freezing all of his health benefits.

Sallie brought her 85-year-old father, Herman Smith, to the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. After the hospital had checked her father’s Medicare eligibility, she was informed that the SSA had ordered her dad’s health benefits canceled due to his ‘death.’

Sallie immediately called the SSA and was told that a representative must personally visit the hospital to confirm that her father is still alive.

After attempts to confirm the issue, the SSA admitted to the mistake, saying that it happened possibly due to a keystroke error where Smith’s Social Security number was entered on the record for the death of a different beneficiary.

Meanwhile, SSA Dallas’ Charlie Brittian called the situation an “unfortunate mistake.” He added that the agency apologizes for the incident, and that it did not intend “to cause any uproar or suffering.”
