DISABILITY BENEFITS: Senator Tom Coburn Urges Social Security to Investigate on Adult Baby Issue

May 17, 2011

Oklahoma City – Oklahoma Republican Senator Tom Coburn has asked for an investigation over the issue on “adult babies” who were able to receive disability benefits from Social Security.

Senator Coburn also questioned the agency’s eligibility procedures for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) after knowing that a 30-year-old Stanley Thornton Jr., who was role-playing as an adult baby, was able to get disability payments.

Mr. Thornton was featured in “Taboo” of National Geographic Channel bottle fed by Sandra Dias, his roommate.

Senator Coburn expressed doubt if it is just appropriate for Thornton to be given benefits despite the fact that he was able to perform some activities to support his living.

Thornton was capable of driving himself to complete errands, designing and custom-making baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and running an Internet support group, the senator stated in his letter to Inspector General Patrick P. O'Carroll Jr.

The inspector general’s office has yet to release a statement over the issue.
