Social Security Disability Insurance

Social security disability insurance is an insurance program administered by the Social Security Administration for disabled people who have worked under Social Security. Social security disability insurance gives a variety of benefits to family members when the main wage earner in the family becomes disabled or dies. SSDI benefits are payable to disabled workers, widows, widowers, and children or adults who have been disabled since childhood who are otherwise eligible.

Social security disability insurance pays monthly benefits to workers who are no longer able to work due to a severe illness or impairment that has lasted or is expected to result in death or to last at least 12 months. In addition, the Social Security Disability Insurance is one of the three basic protections provided by Social Security.

Social Security Disability Insurance is available for those individuals who have worked and paid social security taxes. Social Security pays only for total disability. You will consider as disabled if you cannot do work that you did before, and your disability is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death. The payments begin for the sixth month of your total disability, and are equal to the amount that would be payable if you were age 65 at the time of your disability.
